End of NYS Legislative Session

The New York State legislative session wrapped up on Saturday, June 4th. The last week of session saw a flurry of activity, with many pieces of legislation being passed and signed into law. Included among the bills that have passed both chambers, and are awaiting the Governor’s signature, are the following CHCANYS’ supported bills:

  • A7230 Gottfried/S6534A Rivera: Establishes a primary care reform commission which would review, examine, and make findings on the level of primary care spending and to make recommendations on increasing and strengthening spending on primary care in the state.
  • A807 O’Donnell/S688 Hoylman: Requires insurance coverage for PrEP and PEP.
  • A9442A Gottfried/S9207 Rivera: Requires notification of changes to the model contract with managed care providers under the medical assistance program to be posted on the DOH website and in the state register.

The Legislature also passed a comprehensive package of ten bills to strengthen gun laws which have been signed into law by the Governor on June 6, 2022. Included among the bills were a bill barring the purchase of semiautomatic rifles by anyone under the age of 21, a bill prohibiting the purchase of body armor, a bill expanding the list of those who can file an extreme risk protection order, and other bills that strengthens crime reporting, closing gun loopholes, and more. Additionally, the Governor has signed a legislative package to protect abortion and reproductive healthcare on June 13, 2022. Included among the six-bill package is a bill that provides legal protections for abortion service providers, a bill that prohibits misconduct charges against healthcare practitioners for providing reproductive health services to patients who reside in states where the services are legal, and more.
