For 50 years, Covenant House New York (CHNY) has been a leader in providing services to vulnerable homeless, runaway, and exploited youth. As the largest provider of runaway and homeless youth services in New York City, CHNY serves more than 1,600 young adults ages 16-24 annually with an operating budget of more than  30 million dollars. Our doors are open to all young people who need help, regardless of their race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression.  In addition to meeting their basic needs for food, clothing and shelter, CHNY wraps a range of services around these young people including health, mental health, education, employment, legal, anti-trafficking and other services.  We facilitate our services using trauma-informed principles to help homeless youth leave the streets and achieve independence. We also advocate for systemic change through public policy while promoting awareness of critical issues related to youth homelessness.
 

CHNY is seeking a family physician to join our team of health care professionals at our Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in our state-of-the-art facility that just opened in Manhattan in 2021.   This is an exciting position for someone who is committed to delivering trauma-sensitive medical care to a vulnerable and underserved population.  The population of young people at CHNY are culturally diverse and a significant proportion identify as LGBTQ+.  Despite the challenges they’ve faced, these young people are talented, creative and resilient.   

 

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

As a member of Covenant House New York’s Health and Wellness (FQHC) team, the Family Physician is responsible for providing primary care to health center patients of any age, focusing on holistic patient care, including health promotion and behavior change. Patients of the Center are a combination of young adults ages 16-24 living in CHNY’s residential programs, minor children of residents, and community patients of any age. As a member of this collaborative care team, the Family Physician is also responsible for actively contributing to the achievement of CHNY’s goals regarding performance and culture outcomes. The Family Physician reports to the Medical Director in charge of the Health and Wellness Center.

 

Part-time - 21 hours/three (3) days per week
This position would begin as part-time and offers the potential opportunity for professional advancement to medical director over time.  
 

What You'll Be Contributing

Medical

  • Provides age-appropriate, holistic patient care with the combined skills of an internist and pediatrician.
  • Elicits, records, and interprets the past medical history, family and social history as it applies to the patient.
  • Functions as a member of an interdisciplinary team to plan, deliver and evaluate health care for the Center’s patient population.
  • Orders and performs necessary diagnostic tests, procedures and therapeutic interventions as identified in the plan of care

Administration, Culture and Training

  • Ensures that all electronic health records, and any other files (electronic and paper) are accurate, comprehensive, up-to-date and submitted timely. 
  • Stands in for the Medical Director as needed and as directed. 
  • Provides health promotion education and serves as a resource for Covenant House staff in areas of clinical expertise. 
  • Contributes to and helps cultivate and promote an inspiring culture in the Health Clinic.
  • Contributes to and helps lead initiatives derived to achieve articulated performance outcomes for the Health and Wellness Center and CHNY’s youth. 
  • Embraces a flexible, data-driven culture that is outcomes-oriented and creatively responsive to programmatic challenges. 
  • Promotes a healthy, inclusive, and equitable culture and engaged staff. 
  • Participates in all required training, including in evidence-based medicine and models, such as Motivational Interviewing

Management and Leadership

  • Always upholds CHNY’s mission, vision and principles, standards of conduct, policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned and needed.

Education, Licenses, And Experiences Required For This Role

  • M.D. or D.O. degree from an accredited university is required. 
  • Board Certified required. 
  • Must be currently licensed with the New York State Department of Health.
  • A minimum of one (1) year experience as a Family Physician preferred. 
  • Spanish speaking is preferred.
  • CDS and BLS required
  • Social perceptiveness and sensitivity to our youth population are required. 
  • Facility with, and knowledge of, the health needs of the LGBTQ+ population required. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required. 
  • Experience working with diverse groups is required. 
  • Facility with electronic health records required; experience with eCW preferred.
