Director of Nursing

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The Director of Nursing reports to the Chief Medical Officer and is responsible for the oversight and provision of nursing care delivered to all the individuals served by Whitney M. Young, Jr. Health Center, Inc. Provides direction and oversight in diagnosing and treating human responses to actual or potential health problems through such services as case finding, health teaching counseling and provision of care supportive to and restorative of life and wellbeing. Coordinates the implementation and ongoing monitoring of clinical systems that support patients within the institution to include Infection Control, Medication Management and Vaccine programs.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership:

  • Ensure nursing staff practice is within the scope of abilities as regulated by the Nurse Practice Act of NYS.
  • Development of health care policy and procedures for the Health Center.
  • Development and revision of policies, procedures and manuals associated with Health Services and Infection Control.
  • Consults with the Chief Medical Officer regarding departmental policies, standing orders and individual client problems.
  • Develops and maintains systems that assure that all programs are operating within regulatory guidelines in accordance with NYSDOH.
  • Maintains and promotes effective channels of communication with all other departments.
  • Design and development of in-services/training as needed regarding health care, health policies and infection control.
  • Plans, coordinates, tracks and documents the provision of Influenza and Hepatitis B Vaccines for staff.
  • Coordination and oversight of the Nursing Triage and On Call System.
  • Acts as liaison with community medical providers.
  • Promotes professional growth and assist in the achievement of departmental and organizational goals
  • Undertakes responsibilities and involvement in program planning and development.
  • Adheres to and models organizational personnel policies, operating procedures and philosophy in accordance with the WYH mission.
  • Maintains client and organizational confidentiality in accordance with nursing code of ethics and agency policy on confidentiality (ANA Code).

Supervision of Staff:

  • Provides regular weekly supervision and consultation with RN Supervisors.
  • Conducts staff meetings for all nursing staff.
  • Conducts employee performance appraisals in a timely manner.
  • Directs and supervises nursing staff in regards to health record of each individual.
  • Supervises the training of the medication administration course and practicums for direct care staff.
  • Training of all nursing staff on WYH policies.
  • Conducts staff development in-service seminars.
  • Responsible for selection, hiring, training, evaluation of nursing staff.

Patient Safety/Miscellaneous:

  • Coordinates, monitors, documents and provides follow up of Occupational Exposure Incidents.
  • Provides input to the Health and Safety Committee regarding the development and annual review/revision of Health Service and Infection Control policies, procedures and manuals.
  • Coordinates and maintains the Occupational Exposure Program.
  • Provision of nursing care to individuals as needed.
  • Demonstrates excellence in both internal and external customer service.
  • Understand and is able to effectively communicate HIPAA compliance, corporate compliance and client confidentiality.
  • Ensures and/or remains in compliance with all relevant internal and external regulatory policies and procedures.
  • Adheres to the National Patient Safety Goals as defined by Whitney M. Young Jr. Health Services.
  • Demonstrates excellence in both internal and external customer service.
  • Understands and is able to effectively communicate HIPAA compliance, corporate compliance and client confidentiality.
  • Ensures and/or remains in compliance with local, state and federal regulation, i.e. DHHS HRSA and NYSDOH and all accreditation standards (e.g. Joint Commission and NCQA-PCMH).
  • Adheres to the National Patient Safety Goals as defined by the Joint Commission and Whitney M. Young Jr. Health Center.
  • Completes other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s Degree in Nursing. Seven (7)+ years’ experience in health care services with five (5) or more years of direct managerial experience. Previous experience with labor relations. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrates cultural sensitivity and competency related to populations served. Current NYS Nursing License. Proficient in use of EMR technology and MS Office products.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s Degree in Healthcare Management. Bilingual (English/Spanish). Demonstrated time management and multi-tasking skills. One (1) – two (2) years’ teaching experience; Experience working or living in the target community and knowledge of community resources.
