GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Dental Residency Director at Whitney Young Health (WYH) has authority and responsibility for all aspects of the Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) program, including maintenance of AEGD program accreditation by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). Responsibilities include program administration, development and implementation of the curriculum plan, ongoing evaluation of program content, faculty teaching and student/resident performance, evaluation of student/resident training and supervision in affiliated institutions and off-site rotations; maintenance of records related to the education program; and student/resident selection.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides clinical and administrative leadership for WYH AEGD program, including direct clinical supervision of Resident Dentists.
- Identifies and addresses staff-level and program-level issues and needs. Participates in hiring, coaching, performance management, and disciplinary decisions and actions as needed, in consultation with practice leadership and other appropriate resources.
- Participates in recruitment and orientation activities for Dentists, department staff and Residents.
- Keeps Dental Director and practice leadership team apprised of issues, concerns, needs, and successes related to the Residency program. Works with others to arrive at timely, effective, and patient-centered solutions.
- Serve as the clinical director for all off sites at which dental care is provided, including contractual sites.
- Develops written dental program goals and objectives and defines a systematic method of assessing achievement of those goals by appropriate outcomes measures.
- Maintains awareness of policies, procedures, quality measures, and workflows. Champions efforts to seek continuous improvement and implement best practices. Ensures quality of care and a documented, thorough, and robust Quality Improvement Program.
- Prepares and delivers quarterly chart reviews and evaluations for residents. Develops action plans for improvement as needed.
- Prepares and submits annual CODA survey for AEGD Residency. Tracks and monitors required indicators and completes a quarterly review of program compliance with CODA requirements. Responds to all regulatory and compliance issues with CODA and other third parties.
- Coordinates team and information for annual WYH residency placement event.
- Provides clinical and leadership coverage and backup for Dental Director as needed, to include support for Staff Dentists, resolution of patient complaints, and professional in-service for clinic staff.
- Provides dental services to patients, screens certain patients for possible referral to dental residents as appropriate, helps to provide coverage and support during busy periods, or during staffing shortages.
- Provides and manages direct patient care, including intra and extra oral examinations, evaluations, assessments, diagnoses and treatment.
- Provides excellent internal/external customer service via telephone or face-to-face contact to assist patients with their health care needs.
- Adheres to performance improvement objectives, safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards.
- Documents patient care in a thorough and timely manner using WYH’s approved documentation procedures for clinical care.
- Demonstrates excellence in both internal and external customer service.
- Understands and is able to effectively communicate HIPAA compliance, corporate compliance and client confidentiality.
- Ensures and/or remains in compliance with local, state, and federal regulation, i.e. DHHS HRSA and NYSDOH, and all accreditation standards (e.g. Joint Commission, CODA and NCQA-PCMH).
- Adheres to the National Patient Safety Goals as defined by the Joint Commission and Whitney M. Young Jr. Health Center.
- Completes other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
DDS or DMD from an American Dental Association accredited dental school or Graduate of a Foreign Dental school that has completed an ADA accredited program. A current New York State License. Completion of one (1) year of General Practice Residency/Advanced Education in a General Dentistry Program At least seven (7) years’ dental experience post residency. CPR/BLS Certification. Current Controlled Substances Registration Certification issued by the Drug Enforcement Administration. Demonstrated skill in managing inter-personal matters with skillful communication techniques. Demonstrated ability to build consensus yet able to establish firm chain of command.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience with addressing manifestations of chronic disease in a dental practice through coordination of care with primary care providers. Prior history of utilizing electronic dental records. Experience in community-based dentistry that focuses on both prevention and restoration in underserved populations.

Salary range: $175,000 - $200,000
