Free Services to Help Patients Resolve to Quit Smoking

The beginning of a new year is a time to set goals for becoming healthier. We know most adults want to quit, making this an optimal time for the health center team to offer support to nicotine addicted patients. Because nicotine addiction is a chronic condition, it often takes multiple quit attempts to succeed. With existing disparities in tobacco, many shoulder a disproportionate burden of health problems related to commercial tobacco use due to social, environmental, and economic disadvantages. The New York State Quitline offers healthcare professionals educational resources with tips and techniques for helping patients quit, like using a consistent and nonjudgmental approach. In addition, health center team members can access the Quitline’s Patient Referral Program at https://tinyurl.com/QuitlinePFP, where trained Tobacco Treatment Specialists contact those referred patients who use tobacco or vape products and offer individualized coaching and a free supply of nicotine replacement medications. For more information about free services, including the Learn2QuitNY text program, Quit Coach Chat, and healthcare professional resources, call 1-866-NY-QUITS (1-866-697-8487) or visit the Quitline's website by going to https://tinyurl.com/nysmokefree-CHCANYS.
