MALAIKA - HOTT Health Educator/Intake Counselor, Callen-Lorde Community Health Center in Chelsea
Hometown: Philadelphia, PA
Why do you aspire to serve?
Its not so much an aspiration, but more of a drive. I can’t imagine having a career that doesn’t allow me to give back to the community in a tangible way.
Why did you pick NYC or Upstate NY as your location of service?
I find that I really thrive in urban environments where there is a diverse population of different types of people from all walks of life. You can find literally anything in New York, it’s a place full of opportunities and, of course, challenges. Plus, its close enough to allow me to visit my family and friends back home.
What have you gained from your AmeriCorps experience thus far?
My Americorps experience has given me truly amazing, hands-on, real-life experience working in a clinic for medically underserved populations. I love working with teens, who often times have the most trouble accessing health care, and helping them navigate what can be a daunting system. I like to have honest conversations with them about topics that maybe they have never had a real conversation about before, including sex, their bodies and relationships. Its really rewarding to help young people feel empowered to take responsibility for their health.
Share a favorite hobby/hobbies or interest of yours.
I enjoy crafting (knitting, crossstitching, random art creating) as well as reading and writing short fiction stories. I also have 2 cats, and being with them is kind of a hobby for me as well.
What are your plans after your year of service?
I’d like to get a full-time position at the clinic I’m currently working at. After that, I want to go back to school to become a nurse practitioner.
