LUCIA - Health Outreach Worker, Project Renewal in Manhattan
Why do you aspire to serve?
This world (this country, this city) is heartbreakingly unequal and unjust. By “serving” I can be a part of an organization that minimizes the disturbing disparity in access to wealth and resources, at least in the day to day. That means something to me.
Why did you pick NYC or Upstate NY as your location of service?
I went to school in NY and decided to stay for various reason-it was a familiar place, a lot of my friends were staying, and I figured I had a better chance finding a meaningful way to channel my emotional and intellectual passions here in NY than back home in Maryland.
What have you gained from your AmeriCorps experience thus far?
I’m beginning to learn about the experience of being homeless and the dysfunctional system in place for the homeless.
How do you spend your free time?
Cook, see friends, read, watch tv, attend lectures, see live music, dance
Share a favorite hobby/hobbies or interest of yours.
I like to cook elaborate vegetarian meals.
What are your plans after your year of service?
I want to become more politically engaged. I don’t really have a plan for paying the bills though…Eventually, I also plan on going to graduate school.
