JENNY LO - Puberty & Reproductive Health Educator with the Montefiore School Health Program Bronx, NY
Hometown: Brentwood, NY
Why do you aspire to serve?
This is my second year of service with CHCANYS, during my last year of service I stated: "Humanity is the quality of being humane, kind and compassionate. If I am not doing anything serving those in need, whether it's through service or not, then time is being wasted.” Being kind and compassionate is not just shown through great works; it’s a way of living. I am impacted daily by the needs of the community and I strive to make sure at least one person becomes positively impacted in return. I chose to serve a second year because I have learned through the people of our communities and from personal experiences that touch right at home that our job is never done! AmeriCorps has added fire to my passions on continuing to impact those in need of services, awareness and education in anyway possible. Whether its helping someone in need of health care services, food and shelter or just being their for someone as emotionalm support, even with a simple smile that can change one persons day is all making a difference!
What have you gained from your AmeriCorps experience thus far?
This year has been full of amazing experiences including personal and professional. I had the opportunity to work with a great team at MSHP who are highly dedicated to providing the youth with health programs and services in the South Bronx. I have learned about the disparities and the needs of the youth and it has been a blessing to be able to be a contributing factor through the health classes I provide.
What are your plans after your year of service?
My plan after this year of service with AmeriCorps is to continue to further my education in the Social Work and Public Health field and remain working with children and adolescents.
