CRYSTAL - Reproductive Health Educator, Morris Heights School-Based Health Center in the Bronx
Hometown: Brooklyn, NY
Why do you aspire to serve?
I aspire to serve because I feel it is necessary to serve and give a voice to those who are underserved, underprivileged, and are searching for hope. Whether it may be a smile or a public service I enjoy giving hope and helping others in need. I especially like to serve in sites/organizations dealing with Health. I personally know how hard it is to get the proper care for yourself and your family. Every time I engage someone who is struggling or dealing with difficulties with the health industry I give that individual or family my full attention and make it a priority to help them as much as possible. Doing Americorps gives me fulfillment, satisfaction, patriotism, and meaning to my life when I know that the work I am doing is impacting the city, state, and country that I am serving.
Why did you pick NYC or Upstate NY as your location of service?
I choose NYC as my location to serve because I was born here and I wanted to serve my community, my neighbors, my family and friends who do not have that voice or that ability to stand up for themselves or voice the wrongs that are happening in NYC. I also choose NYC because I want to try and make it a better structured city for the people who live here. I want people to know all the amazing resources this city has to offer, all the life, eccentricity, and great people that are willing to help one another.
What have you gained from your AmeriCorps experience thus far?
I have gained more knowledge of the non profit Health sector, the Department of Education, the health industry in regards to NYC insurance coverage and the importance of school based health centers. I have gained respect, history, and culture of the Bronx, which I never knew before. I have learned that I am more creative with my work and organizing programs than I gave myself credit for. I also gained a new love for Health education in a High School setting.
How do you spend your free time?
On my free time i enjoy playing sports indoors and outdoors. I am on a coed basketball and softball team in NYC. I spend a lot of time with my dog who i take to various parks in NYC, jogging outdoors, hiking, and even fishing. I enjoy reading mystery and history books, cooking for family and friends, taking dance classes, going to the gym, and exploring the city to find new places to eat, play, and enjoy the day.
