John Wesley once said “Do all the good you can, by all the means you can. in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.” I want to live my life following this philosophy. In the past I’ve served internationally, so I wanted to serve as an AmeriCorps member in order to serve people in need in the country that has provided me with so many opportunities throughout my life.”
Why did you pick NYC or Upstate NY as your location of service?
In every season of my life I always want to be somewhere that is far out of my comfort zone, so that is why I chose Upstate NY.
What have you gained from your AmeriCorps experience thus far?
The biggest thing I have gained from my AmeriCorps experience so far is an understanding of why it is important for a patient to be a partner in their healthcare. In public health, we always talk about patient centered care, but I am learning at my site that involving patients really gives them a sense of empowerment while showing them that health professionals really do care.
How do you spend your free time?
I spend my free time hanging out with new friends from church, watching movies, traveling, helping with a youth drama group, and reading.

An interest of mine is all things weddings. In 2010, I planned a Valentine’s Day wedding. It was a lot of stress but it was so worth it at the end of the day. There was no greater gift than seeing the bride and groom’s smiling faces and knowing that all had a good time. I hope to help plan a wedding in the near future!

What are your plans after your year of service?
After this year I plan to go to medical school closer to home so I can watch my sister and brother (ages 4 and 1) grow up. I also plan to continue serving internationally with the medical mission’s team.
