OVERVIEW OF POSITION Mixteca seeks to hire an experienced and motivated bilingual (Spanish/English) emotional health counselor as we expand our community-based emotional health services for recent immigrants from Mexico and Latin America and their families. This is a new position that we created in response to the crisis facing in our immigrant community and the spike in requests for information and emotional support that Mixteca has received since the November election. The emotional health counselor will join a small dedicated interdisciplinary team of professionals and will have opportunities to help us create new programmatic responses to the unprecedented challenges facing our community. This is a 15 - 20 hours a week, per diem position that requires working some evenings and on Saturdays -- the busiest times at Mixteca. The emotional health counselor will report to and receive supervision from our senior mental health counselor.
SKILLS REQUIRED • Master of Social Work, Psychology or Mental Health preferred, or a bachelor’s degree and several years of experience working in the mental health field • Bilingual in Spanish and English, required • Experience working with low-income immigrant communities, required • Knowledge of immigration issues, preferred • Evenings and Saturdays, required • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, required • Public speaking experience, a plus
RESPONSIBILITIES • Provide crisis intervention counseling and short-term counseling and facilitate groups for individuals and families, especially those with immigration-related concerns • Facilitate referrals for services not offered at Mixteca (health care, shelter, vocational training etc.) and work to ensure that clients are effectively linked to needed services in a timely manner • Work with Mixteca’s senior mental health counselor to design and develop a series of culturally and linguistically competent emotional health workshops on topics such as: Managing Stress, Emergency Preparedness, and How to Talk to Children About Immigration Issues • Facilitate emotional health workshops at Mixteca and at sites across the Sunset Park community (schools, churches, community organizations, health centers, etc.) • Assist clients to complete guardianship and power of attorney forms and other documentation, as needed, to prepare in the event of detention/deportation • Attend training in Mental Health First Aid, Know Your Rights and other topics, as determined by Mixteca’s senior mental health counselor • Participate in biweekly supervision and submit monthly reports to Mixteca’s senior mental health counselor • Participate in Mixteca staff meetings and community events
