Position Description:

The Division of Mental Hygiene of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is recruiting a Development Associate for the title City Research Scientist III. He/she will work in the Bureau Systems Strengthening and Access (BSSA) under the supervision of the Director of the of the Implementation and Development unit of the Mental Health Innovation Lab. This position will be part of a team of data scientists managing and developing tools for enhanced measurement and analytics, as well as providing rapid response to data requests.

It is the mission of the BSSA to drive innovation and scalable solutions in behavioral health policy, practice and research in support of new and existing initiatives, and to enhance the ability of the Division to respond to, and lead, substantial changes in the delivery, payment, and policy environment surrounding mental health care services throughout the City of New York

The Innovation Lab is a recently created unit within BSSA intended to develop better ways of capturing mental health needs and gaps, as well as direct technical support and spread for quality improvement and implementation science practices for the purpose of adopting and evaluating high-impact public mental health practices in the community.

The candidate will support proposal drafting and management that supports the work of the Innovation Lab, including maintaining relationships with potential donors and foundations, research/academic partners, managing periodic convenings of these groups to create communities of interest and ongoing networking.


Grant writing, grant research, donor relationship management, and general development.

-- Assist with the coordination and pursuit of grant opportunities to support the mission of Innovation Lab.

-- This position will research grant opportunities, write grant proposals and reports, work with staff to coordinate the production and submission of grant reports.

-- Work with finance and program staff to gather information for proposals

Provide input for written institutional materials as needed.

-- Work with the unit Director to facilitate the grant process.

-- Ensure that the grant files are updated and all information is current.

-- Update and maintain an annual grants calendar and notify Director when reports/grants are due.

-- Contact supervisor with any urgent or unusual matters.

-- Consistent follow through with projects and requests.

Minimum Qual Requirements:
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
Preferred Skills:
Strong written communication skills, including the demonstrated ability to prepare clear, structured, articulate and persuasive proposals.

--Ability to meet deadlines.

--Strong editing skills.

--Knowledge and familiarity with grant research techniques for prospect research, including federal, state, foundation, corporate and private/individual.

--Knowledge of basic fundraising techniques and strategies, including periodic gatherings of key stakeholders and appropriate follow up.

--Strong contributor in fast-paced, high-profile team environments.
